Bacteria in Vagina

The vagina is the female reproductive organs are highly susceptible to infection. This is due to the limits between the urethra to the anus are very close, so that germs such as fungi, bacteria, parasites, and viruses easily fit into the vagina. Therefore, women should be diligent in caring for personal hygiene this region. Infections also occur because of disruption of ecosystem balance in the vagina.

Vaginal ecosystem is a circle of life that is influenced by two main elements, namely estrogen and the bacteria Lactobacillus, or good bacteria. Here, estrogen plays a role in determining the levels of sugars as energy savings in the cell body (glycogen).

Glycogen is the nutrition of Lactobacillus, which is metabolized to its growth. Time metabolism and produce lactic acid, which determines the atmosphere of acid in the vagina, with the potential Hydrogen (pH) ranged from 3.8 to 4.2. With this level of acidity, Lactobacillus will be fertile and pathogenic bacteria (bad) will die.

In the vagina there are various kinds of bacteria, 95 percent of Lactobacillus, 5 percent of the pathogens. In a balanced vaginal ecosystem conditions, pathogenic bacteria will not interfere. If the balance is disturbed, eg acidity decreases, the natural defense also will go down, and vulnerable to infection. The imbalance of the vaginal ecosystem caused by many factors. Among other oral contraceptives, diabetes mellitus, antibiotic, menstrual blood, semen, spraying liquid into the vagina (douching), and hormonal disorders such as during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.
